An early edition of A. B. Guthrie, Jr.'s novel, the first of 6 in the author's Western Sequence series about the pioneers who settled the West. With map of the American West spanning both sides of two pages at title page. The State of Montana adopted the title of this novel as its nickname. Inscribed and signed by the author on dedication page: "For Diana Kendrick-- / With very best wishes / A. B. Guthrie Jr. / Sheridan, Wyo. / April 12, 1972." --- In full burgundy cloth-covered boards with titling in white on spine; pink topstain. Volume wrapped in mismatched jacket from a later edition, as published by World Publishing Company of Cleveland. --- With a little spotting to cloth and prior owner's bookplate & rubberstamping to front free endpaper, else a tightly-bound, sound copy.
