A handsome, compact leatherbound edition of the sixth novel by Charles Dickens (1812-1870), first published serially in 1843. Includes a tissue-guarded frontis illustration of Mr. Pecksniff and Mary. "Martin Chuzzlewit" did not achieve the high level of popularity of some of Mr. Dickens's other works, resulting in financial difficulty for Dickens. As a result, he wrote his famous "A Christmas Carol" as a means of earning additional money. Vol. V in publisher's New Century Library, The Works of Charles Dickens series. --- In soft, flexible dark red leather covers with gilt-stamped titling & leafy decorations to spine. With attractive marbled endpapers in shades of orange. TEG (top edge gilt) and with sewn-in satin placemarker. Undated, but possibly published c.1900s-1930s. --- The gilding to the textblock top has dulled, and with bookseller penciling to front free endpaper, else a well-preserved, tightly-bound copy.; 16mo - 6 to 7 in. tall; (8), 897 pages
