A deluxe Franklin Library first edition of Graham Greene's novel, which is the story of Maurice Castle, who works for the British Intelligence Service MI6. Looking forward to enjoying leisurely days in his impending retirement, Castle is bothered by issues of morality and loyalty in this psychological tale of tension and amorality. With a special introductory note by the author and illustrations in color by Bernard Fuchs. Issued as part of the publisher's First Edition Society series which preceded the Bodley Head and Simon & Schuster trade editions. One of an unspecified number in this limited edition. --- Bound in full green bonded leather covers with three raised bands on spine. Text presented on quality papers. Spine titling, elaborate decorations to covers and spine, and textblock edges all in bright gilt. Green silk moire endpapers, with matching sewn-in satin ribbon placemarker. Volume lacks a dust jacket (as issued). --- A very nice copy: bright, newish and probably unread, but with a hint of sunning to edges of moire endpapers and slight scratches to textblock edge gilding.; Octavo - 8 to 9 in. tall; (12), 306 pages
