A deluxe Franklin Library first edition presenting James A. Michener's hefty historical novel which tells the story of South Africa from its beginnings through the 1970s. With illustrations by Jerry Pinkney and a couple of maps by Jean Paul Tremblay. Issued as part of the publisher's First Edition Society series which preceded the Random House trade edition. One of an unspecified number in a limited edition. --- Bound in full brown bonded leather covers with three raised bands on spine. Text presented on quality papers. Spine titling, elaborate decorations to covers and spine, and textblock edges all in bright gilt. Brown silk moire endpapers, with matching sewn-in satin ribbon placemarker. Volume lacks a dust jacket (as issued). --- An about-Near Fine copy with mild soiling to spine, a few scratches to textblock edge gilding, otherwise tightly-bound and lacking additional damages.
