1970 reprint of the 1953 issuance. A handsome, compact leatherbound edition of the sixth novel by Charles Dickens (1812-1870), first published serially in 1843. "Martin Chuzzlewit" did not achieve the high level of popularity of some of Mr. Dickens's other works, resulting in financial difficulty for Dickens. As a result, he wrote his famous "A Christmas Carol" as a means of earning additional money. Includes an introduction by Kenneth Hayens, a brief biographical sketch of Dickens by "H.d.R." and with a black & white frontis image of Mr. Dickens. --- In full flexible pebbled leather covers, grey patterned endpapers, gilt-stamped spine titling & decorations and blue topstain. Three stars are blindstamped to back cover. Volume lacks a dust jacket. --- A well-preserved copy: bright and unmarked but with very small cover corner bumps and mild creasing to first few leaves, otherwise lacking damages worthy of mention. ; 12mo - 7 to 7-1/2 in. tall; 796 pages
