An early US edition of Rafael Sabatini's 1904 romance, his second published novel which is centered around his Sir Crispin Galliard character. In his prefatory note to this edition, the author explains that due to his immaturity when writing his early novels he preferred they not be published in the US. The Italian-born Sabatini lived most of his adult life in Britain. He was fluent in numerous languages, but chose to write in English because (per Wikipedia), "all the best stories are written in English." --- In full textured black cloth-covered boards with cover & spine titling in orange; red topstain. Clippings about this work and author are laid in. Volume lacks the dust jacket. --- With penciled gift inscription and inked prior owner's signature to front endpapers along with age-toning to leaves & mild soiling to cloth, otherwise a sound, tightly-bound, unmarked copy.; 12mo - 7 to 7-1/2 in. tall; vi, (2), 263 pages
