A first Everyman's Library edition (1940) of a collection of poetry and prose by England's Algernon Charles Swinburne (1837-1909). Swinburne's poems were considered examples of the Decadent Movement, and he lived a rather decadent early life. Includes his "Atalanta in Calydon: A Tragedy" and many other poems; prose includes discussion of the works of Shakespeare and William Blake. Edited, with an introduction by Richard Church. Entry 961 in Everyman's Library Poetry series, edited by Ernest Rhys. --- In Everyman's Library binding style 3 with full green cloth and gilt-stamped spine titling; blindstamped Eric Ravilious-designed 'shell' to cover and brown topstain. In green jacket with Ravilious 'knot' to cover. --- A sound, tightly-bound, unmarked copy but with a hint of age-toning to leaves. Rather brittle dust jacket with a large creased tear to back panel, other small tears & chips but remaining bright, intact and wrapped in removable archival mylar protector.
