A hefty, attractive facsimile of the 1937 Nonesuch Press edition of the sixth novel by Charles Dickens (1812-1870), first published serially in 1843. Illustrated throughout with well-preserved original engraved illustrations by "Phiz" (Hablot Knight Browne). "Martin Chuzzlewit" did not achieve the high level of popularity of some of Mr. Dickens's other works, resulting in financial difficulty for Dickens. As a result, he wrote his famous "A Christmas Carol" as a means of earning additional money. --- In dark red cloth-covered boards backed in black leather, with titling in gilt on brown leather spine label; gilt titling on front cover, along with Nonesuch device on burgundy leather oval; sewn-in red satin ribbon placemarker. A facsimile of a turquoise cover to one of the weekly installments is included, along with facsimiles of the original title pages. Volume wrapped publisher's stiff paper band, which in turn is wrapped in heavy clear mylar cover. --- A clean, tightly-bound, clean copy, though with minor soiling to textblock edges. Mylar wrap with a few small tears & creases to edges and with some rubbing and mild soiling. Overall, this pleasing, weighty volume allows the reader to fully enjoy the masterful storyteller's classic tale.
