Illustrated on 8 color plates and in black & white at chapter heads by Edward Ardizzone and with an introduction by John T. Winterich. Volume bears 1939 date but possibly published c.1940s-50s. Book is housed in maroon paper-covered slipcase. Sandglass leaflet laid in (NY, No. VII:15). --- In full pale grey cloth-covered boards with maroon decorations on covers & spine, bright gilt spine title oval, and maroon topstain. --- A sound copy: clean, tightly-bound and unmarked but with yellowing to spine and a scratch to gilt spine oval.
