A handsome illustrated Heritage Press edition in slipcase of the first novel by Charles Dickens to be directly attributed to him. When the first installment of "The Pickwick Papers" appeared in 1836, Dickens was not well known. When he concluded the series in 1837, his fame had spread around the world, partly because of the popular Sam Weller character. Illustrated on 8 color plates and in black & white at chapter heads by Gordon Ross and with an introduction by John T. Winterich. Sandglass leaflet is not present. --- In full pale grey cloth-covered boards with maroon decorations on covers & spine, bright gilt spine title oval, and maroon topstain. 1938 date appears on copyright page, but possibly published c.1950s-70s. Volume protected in maroon paper-covered slipcase. --- With a little darkening to spine, else a clean, tightly-bound, bright copy. Structurally sound slipcase with mild sunning near opening and a few small tears.
