A rather scarce late 19th century American edition of the seventh full-length novel to be directly attributed to Charles Dickens. Divided into four volumes in this single book, four detailed engraved illustrations by John Gilbert and F. O. C. Darley are included at the beginning of each volume (including a tissue-guarded frontis illustration). An entry in publisher's "Dickens Works, Globe Edition." The publisher, Houghton, Osgood & Co., was a short-lived partnership between James Ripley Osgood and Henry O. Houghton. --- In full reddish-brown cloth-covered boards with titling & decorations in black to cover & spine. Back cover with decorations in blind and with mottled, darker brown coloration. --- A Fair-only copy with tears to cloth at joints, spine ends and to extremities. Textblock remains tightly-bound, though leaves are age-toned to some extent. Front free endpaper with damage from removal of something that had been pasted to it.; 16mo - 6 to 7 in. tall; 322, 312, 306, 336 pages
