Black wrappers printed in white; 445 pp. , text in Japanese; (i) -xx, captions in English for 306 illustrations, chiefly in full color, many full page. Exhibition at the Kyoto National Museum, and the Tokyo National Museum for the commemoration of the 115th Memorial of Linji Yixuan and the 250th Memorial for Hakuin Ekaku. Richly illustrated with reproductions of paintings, ceramics, sculpture, artifacts. ; 4to 11" - 13" tall; Hakuin Ekaku (1686 1769) was one of the most influential figures in Japanese Zen Buddhism, who regarded bodhicitta, working for the benefit of others, as the ultimate concern of Zen-training. Linji Yixuan (died 866 CE) was the founder of the Linji school of Chn Buddhism during Tang dynasty in China. Linji is perhaps best known for his iconoclasm, hitting and shouting, and the use of shocking language in his sermons to disrupt the tendency of his listeners to grasp at things like bodhi, buddhas, patriarchs, bodhisattvas, stages of practice and levels of attainment. He famously said, "If you meet a buddha, kill the buddha". (John McCrae; Burton Watson)
