Its greatest period was under the editorship of Ambrose Bierce (1881-86) , who wrote much of the text and lashed out at political corruption, particularly in local government or related to the Big Four; at revolutionary social views, including those of organized labor and of Denis Kearney; and at Chinese immigration" (Hart, Companion to California).
