Near Fine 1st Ed. in Good Chipped DJ. -McDermand wrote my backpacking bible which I used in the High Sierras in the late 1940's before the era of superpacks, polargard, freeze-dried food, and coated nylon. Meals took so long to prepare that we probably burned up most of the dead wood in the high country. As with McDermand, we felt lucky if we could go a week with less than 60 lb. on our backs. I remember friends castigating McDermand, who worked as a salesman at the Emporium Sports Dept. in San Francisco, because his books encouraged so many fishermen to visit the High Sierras. In those days, we could walk a week without seeing another party.
