P-180545. 1720 WRIGHT & McGILL EAGLE CLAW FLY TYING HOOKS. Eagle Claw made some very fine fly hooks for both steelhead and salt water. When I took Woody Sexton on his first trip to the Florida Keys in 1960, I was still tying tarpon flies on Mustad 3407, but the barbs were so big on 4/0 & 5/0 hooks that we couldn't sink our flies into the fish. Someone introduced us to Capt. Stu Apte, who befriended us immediately. We had been sleeping in my 1957 Chev Station Wagon with my 12 ft. aluminum boat on top and 5 hp Johnson outboard. We were constantly routed by the police and sheriffs for sleeping in unauthorized areas. Stu put us up in his house at Little Torch Key, and introduced us to Eagle Claw 254, a superb hook with a small barb. We used it on everything from #2 for bonefish to 4/0 for tarpon. I took my first Permit after casting to literally thousands; I wanted to eat the damn thing, but Stu said it was No. 7 on the fly in the Keys, and made me mount it. [I had cast to my first fly permit in 1954 at Largo Sound- the fish followed my bonefish fly, but didn't eat it.] Stu took us fishing, and later offered to train us as Light Tackle Guides. Woody took him up, and became one of the premier guides in the Florida Keys. I didn't- I was headed for Europe where I married an English girl.
