Here we have a grouping of carte de visites featuring women of the mid-19th century. The carte de visite was a craze at the time and people collected them like baseball cards. These are all small portraits mounted on heavy cardboard like a cabinet photo, but measure only around 2-1/2"x3-1/2", sometimes 4". Often the backs are very ornate, as photographers used the blank space to advertise. These, however, are fairly plain. Most derive from Louisville or Lexington Kentucky, though we do have one from Brownville, Tennessee. Two show a light touch of hand-tinting and one has a name penciled on the bottom. Very hard to read, but I think it says Sabra Hyerson. She is pretty girl at the far right your screen in the last row.
