This is a very handsome cabinet card produced by the Art Studio of S. Kiefer of Portsmouth, Ohio. The subject is wearing a band uniform, but the only guess as to what band it was is the word on his hat. I used a magnifying glass to read "Civic" which could mean that he played in the town band. At any rate, someone penned the date on the front of the card -- October 2, 1890. The studio that made this must have been upscale, as the sides of the card are scalloped and colored in gilt. The back of the card is lovely too -- it's a shame that a former seller had placed two stickers on the back --one left a blemish to the very top and the second one is still there. The photographer offered this info, "Negatives preserved for future orders. Children's pictures a specialty. Instantaneous Process Used exclusively."
