Hardcover; 8 x 6 inches; viii, 471, [4] pages; frontis portrait of the author; illustrated. Blue cloth decorated in gilt, top edge gilt with remaining edges untrimmed, boards rubbed with mild wear at extremities, faint damp stain to spine near head, dark blue clay coated end papers, scattered foxing and tanning at page edges, rear internal hinge just starting to crack near tail, binding a little tender but intact. Overall a beautiful volume. The Martian is a largely autobiographical novel that describes the lives of two long-time friends, Barty Josselin and Robert Maurice, beginning with their boyhood days in 1850s Paris. George du Maurier (1834 - 1896) was a Franco-British cartoonist and author, best known for his cartoons in Punch and for his novel Trilby. He was the father of actor Sir Gerald du Maurier and grandfather of writers Angela du Maurier and Dame Daphne du Maurier. He was also the father of Sylvia Llewelyn Davies and grandfather of the five boys who inspired J.M. Barrie's Peter Pan.
