Inscribed by author, signed J. J. J. Limited edition of 65 on Japanese paper signed by publisher, this is #16. Full vellum binding with gilt lettering and pilgrim image to spine, publishers crest to front board, plate illustrations and in-text drawings, generally reproductions of medieval art, 451 pp. Inscribees name scratched out. Pencil margin lines to portions of text. Very good. Jusserand was the French ambassador to the United States for over two decades; this history was written during his years when he was traveling extensively. This popular work serves as excellent background for a reading of Chaucers Canterbury Tales, with a third of the book describing the roads, and the remaining focusing on different types of travelers: minstrels, wandering workmen, pilgrims, etc. Medieval wayfarers were certainly predecessors of the tramps and hobos of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.
