Hardcover, brick-red cloth covers with pasted onlay of a painting ("Albatross" by Robert Penn.) In 1968, the Bureau of Indian Affairs helped fund a writing contest for Native American students. The winners show a wide distribution across America--Navajo, Eskimo, Choctaw, Ute, Blackfeet. An important step for Native American writing: the organizer T.D. Allen states: "The ultimate goal was to help cure the silent-stolid-Indian syndrome and to put an end to some of the distortions perpetuated by members of other cultures writing about Indians." The success of this project led to three more volumes in subsequent years.
