An important ante-fire Chicago imprint. (In 1871, Chicago was had one of the most devastating fires in American history, which wiped out almost every building in the city and destroyed, of course, most of the locally printed books and pamphlets in the collection of the already active Chicago Historical Society and those also in private hands. This circumstance, plus a second destruction of the library of the Chicago Historical Society, is responsible for the relative rarity of Chicago imprints of earlier date, frequently referred to in the book world as "ante-fire Chicago imprints." ) Gilbert Abbott Beckett (9 January 1811 30 August 1856) was an English humorist, the son of a lawyer, and belonged to a family claiming descent from Thomas Becket. Destined for the legal profession, he was called to the Bar. In addition to contributions to various periodicals and newspapers, including Punch, The Illustrated London News, The Times, and Morning Herald, he produced over fifty plays, many of which attained great popularity, and he also helped to dramatize some of Dickens' works. He is perhaps best known as the author of Comic History of England, Comic History of Rome, Comic Blackstone, etc. He was also distinguished in his profession, acted as a commissioner on various important matters, and was appointed a metropolitan police magistrate. A respectable copy with lots of life left. LOC SSS-20
