The Bible In Spain - 232 pages and the Gypsies Of Spain - 148 pages plus 4 pages of ads for other books published by Carter. Acceptable, no DJ - as issued. Major shelf/edge wear, rubbing, soiling and tears to original dark brown cloth boards - corners bumped and worn. Gilt on spine is almost all worn out. Previous owner name in pencil on FFEP. All pages are intact, readable and foxed. Second half of the book concerning the Gypsies Of Spain has chapters on their vocabulary, the language of the Gitanos and the robber language. Book relates Borrow's travels through Spain while working as a Bible salesman between 1835 and 1838, during the Carlist Civil War. His activities were on behalf of the Bible Society, and encountered much opposition from the Roman Catholic Church and many national and local politicians. An acceptable reading copy only.LOC SSS-16
