Vintage Hardcover with DJ and bonus related book, First Edition, 1981 Wayne State University Press, 229 pages with index. Fine, in a Fine DJ. (Still in publishers shrink-wrap and never touched). In 1882, the charismatic Father Dominic Hippolytus Kolasinski became pastor of St. Albertus. In November 1885, the parish became factionalized and Kolasinski was reassigned. This book tells the back story of what happened. The major part of this work is an able and engaging chronicle of the advent, vicissitudes, schism, and tenuous reconciliation of the Reverend Dominick H. Kolasinski and his Polish immigrant followers with the institutional Catholic Church in Detroit in the 1890s. Often resembles a comic opera with violent (there were riots) and pathetic overtones. Well composed and highly detailed narrative of the Kolasinski Affair even though the Diocese denied the author access to their archives. Touches on the resentment of Polish-American Catholics of the first generation against the Irish and German heirarchs (who were predominantly tavern owners) who dominated church life in the industrial enclaves of Northern cities. Very Scarce. Bonus related book is The Kolasinski Story, Priest-Protector of Detroit's Pioneer Polish Immigrants OR Father of Polish-American Church Independentism by Eduard Adam Skendzel, Softcover, First Edition, 1979. Littleshield Press, Grand Rapids, MI, 108 pages. Near Fine, in illustrated wraps. Just a whisper of shelf/edge wear to covers. No previous owner markings - all pages are clean and unmarked. Another look at the same story and this book is even scarcer than the one above. LCC 79-64404. OCLC#-5622184. Two related books dealing with Early Polish American history in Detroit for one price. Both are superb copies. LOC SSS-23
