Six slender abridged reprints of classic works as designed by Ted Gensamer, each in a different colored cloth with dust jacket printed during different months of 1936 at the Powgen Press in NYC. Included in the set are: 1) A Descent into the Maelstrom by Edgar Allan Poe with illustrations by Charles E. McCurdy (March), 2) Life Without Principle by Henry David Thoreau with four illustrations by Susanne Suba (April), 3) Legends of the Province House by Nathaniel Hawthorne with illustrations by Jean Lamont (June), 4) Compensation by Ralph Waldo Emerson with designs by C. Barney Moore (July), 5) The Legend of Sleepy Hollow by Washington Irving with drawings by Mary Dana (August), 6) Part one of the first edition of Leaves of Grass as published for Walt Whitman in 1855 and which is now called Song of Myself with decorations by Jos. A. Low (September). The six books all fit into a protective folded card wrapper which in turn fits into a matching slipcase; both are labeled with the series title. ; 5" x 7"; Books with no wear of note. The jacket of "Descent" has a small loss at the hinge bottom, the jacket for "Leaves" has a small hole at the right side on the front panel. Other jackets slightly edgeworn. The outer wrapper lightly rubbed with faint creasing on the back. The slipcase just has some tiny areas with nicks along the edge. In all, a nicely preserved set.
