This volume was published in 1979 with a new Introduction by Richard Brilliant. The book is divided into four sections. The first is a general consideration of Rome's topography and the way in which the city adapted to it. Next is a description of the Palatine hill on which the city was founded and which eventually became the seat of the Empire. Next is a description of the Sacra Via, which extends from the Coliseum to the Capitolium, and was the first part of the city to be thoroughly excavated. Finally, the different regions that developed during and after Augustus, like the Circus Maximus and the Esquiline, are discussed. In addition, there are two detailed indexes, one organized according to architectural groupings, and the other according to Roman chronology. . The volume is in excellent condition, tight, square, and clean, with onl mild soiling on the edges only, else fine.
