Publisher's quarter black cloth over printed boards, top edge black, fore and bottom edges deckle. Illustrated with woodcuts by Lynd Ward, printed on rectos only. Gods' Man is a wordless novel by American artist Lynd Ward (19051985) first published in 1929. In 144 captionless woodblock prints, it tells the Faustian story of an artist who signs away his soul for a magic paintbrush. Gods' Man was the first American wordless novel, and is seen as a precursor of, and influence on, the development of the graphic novel. This is the third printing of the first edition. It was first published in October 1929, just before the Stock Market Crash. Despite the timing, a second printing was completed in December of 1929 and this third printing in January 1930. . The volume is in excellent condition, tight, unmarked, and clean, very slightly cocked. NEAR FINE. B&W Woodcuts. 8vo 8" - 9" tall. Unpaginated pp
