Publisher's full green cloth, gilt lettering on black panel on spine, red floral printing on covers and spine. Generously illustrated with 2 full-color and 12 B&W plates by Lewis Daniel. Part One includes: "The Tale of a Tiger;" "A Short Story of a Cow and a Sow;" "The Tragedy of the Till;" "The Manager's Pig;" "A Correspondence;" and "The Money Lender." Part Two are "Mrs. Caudle's Curtain Lectures." Part Three contains essays about Douglas Jerrold, Lewis Daniel, and Mr. Daniel's 'Thoughts about his Illustrations." Douglas William Jerrold (1803-1857) was an English dramatist and writer. Jerrold wrote for numerous periodicals, and gradually became a contributor to the "Monthly Magazine," "Blackwood's," the "New Monthly," and the "Athenaeum." To "Punch," the publication which of all others is associated with his name, he contributed from its second number in 1841 until within a few days of his death. "Punch" was a humorous and liberal publication. Jerrold's liberal and radical perspective was portrayed in the magazine under the pseudonym 'Q', which used satire to attack institutions of the day. "Punch" was also the forum in which he published in the 1840s his comic series "Mrs Caudle's Curtain Lectures." The illustrator, Lewis C. Daniel (1901-1952), studied under the engraver H. Wickey and was a member of the American Watercolor Society. He received a commendation at the Los Angeles exhibition of 1932. He illustrated works of literature, including "The Gospel According to St John" and a poem by Walt Whitman. . The volume is in virtually perfect condition, with only the slightest shelf-wear, else as new; unmarked, tight, square and clean. The slipcase also shows minor shelf-wear. FINE.
