Eric Robert Russell Linklater (1899-1974) was a Welsh-born Scottish writer of novels and short stories, military history, and travel books. For "The Wind on the Moon," a children's fantasy novel, he won the 1944 Carnegie Medal from the Library Association for the year's best children's book by a British subject. Linklater served as rector of Aberdeen University in 194548 and received an honorary degree the following year. He was appointed CBE in 1954, served as deputy lieutenant of Ross and Cromarty county in 196873, and was elected a fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh in 1971. .
