Second, much revised edition, first printing. Bound in custom signed green half-leather (Harrison of Pall Mall) over green silk boards, spine in six compartments separated by raised bands, gilt lettering on burgundy label in one compartment, gilt tooling in remainder, blind-stamped borders on covers, all edges marbled, marbled endpapers. Charles William Shirley Brooks (1816 1874) was an English journalist and novelist. Brooks contributed to many of the very best periodicals. He was a lead writer on the Illustrated London News, to which he furnished a weekly article under the name of Nothing in the Papers. He conducted the Literary Gazette 18589, and edited Home News after the death of Robert Bell in 1867. To a volume edited by Albert Smith in 1849, called Gavarni in London, he furnished three sketches The Opera, The Coulisse, and The Foreign Gentleman; and in companionship with Angus B. Reach he published A Story with a Vengeance in 1852. In 1851 joined the staff of Punch (to which he contributed under the name Epicurus Rotundus) and in 1870 he succeeded Mark Lemon as editor. The Gordian Knot was first issued as a serial publication, the latter portion of which was interrupted. This second edition is much revised and improved by the author, and "may be termed . a new novel." . Old bookseller's price sticker (Lazarus) on ffep, otherwise unmarked, some light foxing and staining on a few pages, else fine; seemingly unread, tight, and square. Scarce in this edition. A fine looking volume. VERY GOOD. . 16mo 6" - 7" tall
