First edition, first printing. Bound in custon half olive calf over marbled boards, spine in six compartments separated by raised bands, gilt lettering in three compartments, top edge gilt, fore and bottom edges deckle, marbled endpapers. Illustrated with two B&W drawings and several tail-pieces. The author, Arthur C. James, a professor at Eton College (apparently known as "Ajax") included this Preface, dated July, 1899, upon his retirement: "This little collection has been strung together chiefly as a personal parting gift to the members of my House, in the hope that it may serve to remind them of the lighter as well as the graver side of one whose work among them has been a labour of love; who has felt with them in all their cares and successes; and who hopes that in trying to do his duty to them he has not unduly vexed them nor failed to win their regard." . Former owner's armorial bookplate (F. Manley Sims) on fep, and inked stamp ("Manley Sims Eton Collection") on the title page, minor foxing on blank preliminary pages only, front cover lightly rubbed, gilt on spine mildly faded, else fine; otherwise unmarked, tight, square, and clean. A beautiful copy of this extremely scarce volume. VERY GOOD. . B&W Drawings. 4to 11" - 13" tall. (vi), 88 pp
