1797 FIRST EDITION OF INSECT VOLUME (BUTTERFLIES AND MOTHS) WITH 52 SPECTACULAR HAND COLORED COPPER PLATES BY RENOWNED AUGSBURG ENGRAVER.
6 1/2 x 4 x 1 1/2 inches hardcover, 3/4 leather binding with brown paper covered boards, spine with raised bands, gilt ruled and tooled compartments, and tan leather label with gilt title. Lacking front free endpaper. Engraved title depicting cherub inscribing a memorial to Abraham Christian Wilhelms. 424 pp, 52 hand-colored copper plates. Covers rubbed, corners bumped, gilt spine bright, scattered foxing and browning of text and plates, but colors are vivid and unmarked. Very good minus. Volume 2 (offered here) contains butterflied and moths.
GOTTLIEB TOBIAS WILHELM (1758 - 1811) was a Protestant pastor and natural history writer, probably best known for his monumental Unterhaltungen aus der Naturgeschichte (Wilhelm's Discourses on Natural History). This was issued in weekly instalments from his father's publishing house, with illustrations by renowned Augsburg engraver JACOB XAVER SCHMUZER (1713-1775). Overall scope of the work: 25 volumes (with a total of 1469 illustrations).
