SMALL VOLUME OF MEDICAL CASE REPORTS BY 93 YEAR-OLD DR. F. PARKES WEBER, MASTER OF THE INTERESTING CASE--PRESENTATION COPY TO A COLLEAGUE WITH SIGNED LETTER.
Slim hardcover, 9 inches tall, yellow paper covered boards, title to cover, autograph dictated signed letter from author to medical colleague affixed to front paste-down, salutation and author's initials to front free endpaper. Covers slightly worn, corners bumped, very good. The letter is written on Dr. F. Parkes Weber's stationary, dated August 10th 1956. Dear Dr. Barnard, Thank you so much for your prompt reply. I am sending you a copy of my new little book [enclosed with this letter] which refers to the interesting case in question. I hope, some other portions of the book will also interest you. Believe me, with kind regards and best wishes, Yours sincerely, F. Parkes Weber, There is a notation at the top of the page indicating that the letter was dictated (Weber was 93 years old), and the text is written in a younger hand whereas the signature and initials reflect his age.
FREDERICK PARKES WEBER (1863 - 1962) was an English dermatologist and author who practiced in London. Weber was educated at Charterhouse and Trinity College, Cambridge. He subsequently studied medicine at St. Bartholomew's Hospital, and abroad at Vienna and Paris. Returning to England, he worked (since 1894) at the German Hospital, Dalston (London), later he became House Physician and House Surgeon at St. Bartholomew's Hospital. Weber contributed over 1200 medical articles and wrote 23 books over a period of 50 years. His name is associated with a number of (mostly rare) disorders, including Klippel-Trenaunay-Weber syndrome, Weber-Christian disease, Osler-Weber-Rendu disease, Sturge-Weber syndrome, Weber-Cockayne syndrome, and Parkes Weber syndrome. Together with his father, Weber was an avid coin collector; their numismatic collection being donated to several places, such as the Boston Medical Library, the British Museum, the Bodleian Library at Oxford, and Fitzwilliam College at Cambridge. This explains the inclusion in this book of A Portrait Medal of Paracelsus and A Numismatic Suggestion.
