JAROMIR VASKU (born 1926) graduated in 1950 from Purkinje University (now Masaryk University) in Brno. In 1964, he gained his DSc at the Charles University in Prague. In 1965, he became Professor of Pathophysiology at the Faculty of Medicine of the Purkinje University. He was the director of the Institute of Pathophysiology from 1959 to 1990. From 1967 to 1991, he was the State Coordinator and Director of the artificial heart research at the University in Brno. From 1961 to 1962, he worked as a resident at the Institute for Experimental Medicine and Surgery in Montreal University in Canada under the leadership of Professor Hans Selye, and actively participated in the discovery of calciphylaxis. As a leading Czech pathophysiologist, he has founded the Czech school of pathophysiology, and has educated numerous Czech pathophysiologists. In the mechanical heart assist device and the total artificial heart, he became a pioneer in Central and Eastern Europe, and has intensively cooperated with scientists in Germany, Austria, Poland, and Russia. For many years, he sustained a close cooperation with Japanese research teams from University of Tokyo. A very important step in the development of the Czechoslovak artificial heart research was the visit of University of Utah Professor Don Olsen at the Institute of Pathophysiology in Brno in 1978. During his visit, Professor Olsen implanted the total artificial heart Jarvik-3, and showed to the Brno group the most important avenues for future research. In the following years of intensive research work, this group, under the leadership of Professor Vatk , succeeded in performing 66 implantations of the total artificial heart in calves. The longest survival in a calf314 daysrepresented a European record. One of most important problems was the prevention of mineralization processes in the blood pumps. A systemic way of effective prevention of the mineralization was the successful application of the so-called "reversed calciphylaxis" (or "anacalciphylaxis"), where Professor Vatk used his large experience gained when he was a coworker of Professor Hans Selye.
