1960 UNIQUE LARGE ATLAS OF THE SKELETAL EMBRYOLOGY OF THE LABORATORY MOUSE PUBLISHED BEFORE THE EXPLOSION OF MOLECULAR BIOLOGY.

35.5x28.5 cm printed heavy board covers, spiral bound, i-xiii, 169 pp, many photographic illustrations of cleared specimens, developmental charts. Corners bumped, residue from label removed from top of cover, library hand stamp to half-title and title page, discard stamp back endpaper. Pages clean and unmarked, very good minus.

FROM THE PREFACE: On the 14th day there is one bone, the clavicle, the first center of the ossification process. One day later, the 15th, there are more than 50 [compare pages 19 and 21!]. Only a serial progression of photographs together with the Chronological Table Index as evolved for this Atlas can convey the dramatic swiftness of augmentation and the beautiful exactitude of this structural process. . A noteworthy addition is the recording and tabulation of sex variations in the chronological order of ossification centers. The word atlas first appeared on the volumes of maps made by Mercator in connection with the first great voyages of discovery. So the island and archipelago bones appear in the sea of the new world of each of these embryonic creatures, each at its fixed time, in its fixed place. Of their world, this is the Atlas. [Note: in Chronology of Ossification Centers (page 5), there is burst of formation of centers on day 15, then marked increase after 21 days (birth)].

ZOLTON T. WIRTSCHAFTER (1899-1967) Head of Research Laboratory, Veterans Administration Hospital and the University of Oregon.
