1963 SCARCE UNIQUE GUIDE TO ANATOMY FOR PRACTICING ANESTHESIOLOGISTS, CONTAINING PHOTOGRAPHIC STEREOSCOPIC IMAGES AND VIEWER.

9 1/4 inches tall hardcover, green cloth binding, gilt title to spine, i-xv, 389 pp, 176 figures, most stereoscopic photographs (including 8 in color), plastic lorgnette stereoscopic viewer in pocket on back paste-down.

WILLIAM H. L. DORNETTE M.D. was professor of anesthesiology and chairman of the Department at the University of Tennessee. This book is dedicated To Edward Boyce Tuohy (1908-1959) physician, teacher, anesthesiologist, who in 1950 suggested to the author the possibility of using stereoscopic photography to illustrate techniques of anesthesia. Dornette was also a lawyer and author of Clinical Anesthesia: Legal aspects of anesthesia, F.A. Davis Co., Philadelphia 1972, and Legal Issues in Anesthesia Practice, F.A. Davis Company, Philadelphia 1991. In a review of Anatomy for the Anesthesiologist: A Stereoscopic Atlas for JAMA, Vol. 189 No 9 (1964), Dr. JB Stetson concludes, The stereoscopic atlas idea is novel and Professor Dornette is to be complimented on his bravery for attempting its use. Unfortunately, some of the photographic reproductions in the book seem to be of poor quality and the viewing glasses too small. . Dummies, models, mock-ups, skeletons, and patients (anesthesiologists) are used in the photographs to demonstrate the anatomy of nerve blocks, tracheostomy, reflex pathways, lung segments, protection of teeth, and so on. There is room for disagreement with a few of Dr. Donette's statements, but sections such as the one entitled 'use of the bite block' are invaluable. As in the waltz where 'Every little movement has a meaning all its own,' so in the proper practice of anesthesiology, every physical act has an anatomic meaning or reason all its own. Dornette has tried to show us these meanings.
