REVIEW OF STUDIO DEI GEMELLI, Am J Hum Genet 3:285-91, 1951: "Studio dei Gemelli is a very imposing work, with its masterly printing and binding. One is reminded of the glorious past of Italian graphic art upon looking at this lavishly illustrated, handsomely ornated volume, a work of art from the 'Citta del Vaticano'. The quality of the paper, the typesetting, the numerous photographs and colored folding plates, the red lettering of the cover-title with a pair of playful twins hiding behind it-all contribute to the favorable impression which the book is likely to make even upon those who do not read Italian. That Dr. Gedda's interest in the subject became a lasting one is further shown by the establishment of a Twin Study Center at Rome and in the publication of a new journal (Acta Gemellologica) to be edited by him. The author writes in good Italian style which is easy to read. Being essentially a recorder of the research of others, he shows a distinct restraint and critical conservatism in every part of his Studio. By offering his gigantic synopsis to the world of science he was able to show that the phenomenon of twinning is more than just a biological exception or a source of curiosity and humor. Nature's authentic experiment has now become a general method for the study of human biology which needs Gedda's collection as a guide to its better understanding."--CLAUDIUS F. MAYER, Editor of the Index-Catalogue, Surgeon General's Library, Washington, D.C.

LUIGI GEDDA (1902-2000) graduated in medicine in Turin in 1927, and beginning in 1960 he taught at Sapienza University of Rome, where he was granted a chair of medical genetics. As a scholar of twinning, in 1951 together with Luisa Gianferrari he founded the Italian Society of Medical Genetics. He also established the Institute of Medical Genetics and Twin Studies Gregorio Mendel, along with the branch Luigi Gedda Institute of Medical Genetics & Twin Research in Israel.
