FROM THE PREFACE: Many of the drawings accompanying the work are original, and were made by the author, or by his friend Dr. H. D. Schmidt, favorably known for his anatomical investigations. JOSEPH LEIDY (1823 1891) was an American paleontologist, parasitologist and anatomist. Leidy was professor of anatomy at the University of Pennsylvania, later was a professor of natural history at Swarthmore College and the director of scientific and educational programs at the Wagner Free Institute of Science. He served as the first president of the American Association of Anatomists. Leidy was an early American supporter of Darwin's theory of evolution, and lobbied successfully for Darwin's election to membership in the Academy of Natural Sciences of Philadelphia. Leidy was also a renowned parasitologist, and determined as early as 1846 that trichinosis was caused by a parasite in undercooked meat.
