SCARCE FRENCH 19TH CENTURY COLOR ILLUSTRATED GUIDE TO EDIBLE AND POISONOUS MUSHROOMS. 6 1/4 inches tall hardcover quarter green leather with gilt spine and marbled boards and endpapers, green ribbon, uncolored frontis and 11 double-page very fine handcolored plates with tissue guards. Arthur loffe was born in 1826 in Vesoul, Franche-Comt (Freigrafschaft Burgund), France. He was a trained taxidermist and ran a naturalist preparatory business as well as a small school in the Rue de lEcole de Mdecine 20, Paris. loffe taught his students how to conserve animals and plants. He published several oeuvres with respect to different topics on plants, animals and mushrooms under the pseudonym Kroenishfranck. loffe billed himself as a professor of taxidermy, though not mentioning any affiliated institution, and was an honorary member and correspondent of many scientific societies. Eloffe's catalog of 1862 (issued from his apartment at 20 Rue de l'Ecole-de-Mdicine, adjacent to the competing Boube shop at no. 10, the same apartment where Jean Paul Marat was assassinated by Charlotte Corday) offered to provide analyses of rock and mineral samples, as well as a wide array of specimens and collections.
