SIGNED AUTOBIOGRAPHY OF LEGENDARY AMERICAN ANTHROPOLOGIST MARGARET MEAD. Small quarto. Green cloth boards, spine gilt, vg in vg dj. Inscribed and signed by author on title page, To June St John, Margaret Mead, 1976. Laid in glossy postcard of Mead and lecture handbill, U Michigan Ann Arbor, November 3, 1976. Cited by GL Miller (1992): This autobiography by Margaret Mead (1901-1978), who became one of the most well-known and influential anthropologists of the twentieth century, is, despite its subtitle, a revealing self-portrait that ranges from childhood to grandmotherhood. Mead describes her strong familial influences and instincts, her college and graduate school years, her marriages (although offering little insight into her relationships with her three husbands), and her field trips to Samoa, New Guinea, md Bali. She stresses the importance of generational continuity and emphasizes that throughout her life she followed a course and cultivated interests established early in life, a single-mindedness that yielded a substantial harvest. Numerous illustrations; family tree; index of personal names.
