Updike, Merrymount Press, Boston, July 1925. Sunning to cover and spine, 1/4 inch spot back cover, otherwise very good. Laid in: TLS from William G. Wendell (1888-1968) to Jeffries Wyman Jr (1901-1995), and Keepsake from the Author printed poem delivered at Jacob Wendell Scholars Dinner 1947. The Jacob Wendell Scholarship Prize, which was established in 1899 by bequest of Jacob Wendell, is awarded annually to a Harvard College sophomore identified by the selection committee as the most promising and broad-ranging scholar in his or her class, without reference to financial need. The prize is awarded on the basis of the first-year academic record, a piece of written work, and letters of recommendation. JEFFRIES WYMAN JR, the 22nd recipient of the prize (1923), was an American molecular biologist and biophysicist notable for his research of proteins, amino acids, and on the physical chemistry of hemoglobin. Wyman was a member of the National Academy of Sciences and of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, the first scientific advisor to the US Embassy in Paris, director of a regional science office in the Middle East for UNESCO, a founder and past secretary general of the European Molecular Biology Organization, and professor of biology at Harvard.
