1845 MONOGRAPH ON THE LUNGFISH WITH COPPER PLATES BY PROMINENT AUSTRIAN ANATOMIST INSCRIBED BY AUTHOR TO THE DIRECTOR OF THE NATURAL HISTORY COLLECTIONS. 12 1/2 inches tall hardcover, printed paper covered boards, inscribed on front endpaper, Herrn Hofrath u Director Ritter von Schreibers. Lochachtungsvoll der Verfasser [To Councilor and Director Ritter von Schreibers with respects of the author]. Small handstamp of Library of R. Harry, Jr. to cover and front endpaper. 64pp, 5 engraved copper plates of dissections showing the anatomy of Lepidosiren paradoxa, the South American lungfish. Old superficial water stains to covers, binding tight, text and plates crisp and unmarked. A very good association copy. JOSEPH HYRTL (1810 "1894) was an Austrian anatomist, who began his medical studies in Vienna and in 1833, while he was still a medical student, was named prosector in anatomy. He later became curator of the museum, adding valuable treasures to the museum by the preparations which he made for it. In 1837, when only twenty-six, Hyrtl became professor of anatomy at the University of Prague, where he completed his textbook of human anatomy, which went through some twenty editions and has been translated into several languages. The chair of anatomy at Vienna fell vacant in 1845, and he was immediately elected. Before his death he was to see this department of anatomy become one of the most important in the medical schools of the world. CARL FRANZ ANTON RITTER VON SCHREIBERS (1775 "1852) was an Austrian naturalist who was a native of Pressburg, Hungary (today Bratislava, Slovakia). He was the first to perform a comprehensive anatomical study of the olm, a cave-dwelling, aquatic amphibian. In 1802 he was an assistant of natural history and agricultural sciences at the University of Vienna. In 1806 he was appointed director of the Viennese natural history collections (Naturalienkabinette), which became his life's work. During his time as director, the size of the museum's library grew from a few scientific books to a collection of over 30,000 volumes. THE SOUTH AMERICAN LUNGFISH (Lepidosiren paradoxa) is the single species of lungfish found in swamps and slow-moving waters of the Amazon. Fossils of the modern species have been found between 72 and 66 million years ago during the Maastrichtian stage of the late Cretaceous just before the extinction that killed off the non avian dinosaurs.
