Bowers, M.D. THE ASIA SOCIETY The Asia Society is a nonprofit, nonpolitical organization founded in 1956 in the belief that there is an urgent need for greater knowledge of Asia in the United States and for a better understanding between Americans and the peoples of Asia. A major activity of the Society is to provide its members and friends a wide range of information on Asia by means of lectures and conferences focused on various Asian countries. In April and May 1972 the Council on Chinese Affairs of The Asia Society presented a series of four illustrated lectures on medicine, public health and science in the People s Republic of China. The purpose of the lectures was to afford an opportunity to interested laymen to obtain firsthand information about developmerits in these fields in China. JOHN ZIMMERMAN BOWERS (1913 - 1993) was a medical educator and historian, President of the Josiah Macy Jr. Foundation of New York from 1965 to 1980. Dr. Bowers had a keen interest in the Far East that dated to the years after World War II, when he was sent to Japan by the Atomic Energy Commission to examine survivors of the atomic bomb attacks on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. He is author of Science and Medicine in Twentieth Century China (1989).
