1909 THE FIRST COMPREHENSIVE TEXT ON EXPERIMENTAL EMBRYOLOGY IN ENGLISH BY MEMBER OF THE ROYAL DUBLIN FUSILIERS WHO DIED AT GALLIPOLI IN 1915. 9 inches tall hardcover, brown pebbled cloth binding, gilt title to spine, viii, 341 pp, 167 illustrations. Corners worn, spine ends frayed, library call letters blacked out on spine, institutional library bookplate front paste-down, perforated library stamp to title page, library pocket to back paste-down, binding tight, pages unmarked, good+. FROM THE PREFACE: the Physiology of Development really dates from Roux's production of a half-embryo from a half-blastomere, and the consequent formulation of the ' Mosaik-Theorie' of self differentiation. . In writing this review I have had the very great advantage of an excellent model in the textbook of Korschelt and Heider . The last chapter is devoted to the theories, scientific and philosophical, of Hans Driesch. I sincerely hope that Herr Driesch will allow my great admiration for the former to atone in some measure for my inability to accept the tenets of neo-vitalism. Contains comparative embryology of amphibia, fish, amphioxus, coelenterata, echinodermata, nemertina, ctenophora, chaetopoda and mollusca, ascidia. Also contains the part played by the spermatozoon in the determination of egg-structure, and the part played by the nucleus in differentiation. JOHN WILFRED JENKINSON (1871-1915) was a pioneer in the field of comparative developmental biology and one of the first to introduce experimental embryology to the UK at the start of the twentieth century. He was the first lecturer in embryology at the University of Oxford. Nature 95, 456-456 (24 June 1915): Dr. J. W. Jenkinson, whose death in Gallipoli we announced last week, science has lost a devoted and distinguished son. His friends in Oxford had scarcely realised that he had reached the front when news came that he was killed in action on June 4. A keen member of the Oxford Volunteer Training Corps he applied for a commission, though over age, and joined the 12th Worcestershire regiment in January last. He was promoted to a captaincy on April 1, and on May 10 left for service in the Dardanelles, being one of a draft of six officers from his regiment attached to the 2nd Royal Dublin Fusiliers.
