1954 VB WIGGLESWORTH--FIRST EDITION ILLUSTRATED CLASSIC MONOGRAPH ON EXPERIMENTAL INSECT PHYSIOLOGY. 8 3/4 inches tall hardcover, sky blue cloth binding, image of fly center cover, handstamp previous owner name to front paste-down, viii, 152, 45 illustrations, 4 plates. very good in very good price clipped dust jacket in mylar cover. CITED BY SJ GOULD in Ontogeny and Phylogeny: "The most crucial experiments for heterochrony are those that mimic natural occurrences rather than produce developmental anomalies. Wigglesworth (1954, pp. 70-71) submitted fourth-stage larvae of Rhodnius to different temperatures. Those raised at low temperatures molted to fifth-stage larvae more juvenile than normal, while larvae grown at high temperatures were more adult than normal in their fifth stage. Wigglesworth argues that low temperatures slightly accelerate the action of juvenile hormone, while high temperatures depress it. Long photoperiods also tend to increase activity of the corpora allata. Arctic and high mountain insects often have reduced wings and other juvenile characters as adults." ALSO CITED BY RYAN in Mystery of Metamorphosis: "Vincent B. Wigglesworth's contribution to our understanding of metamorphosis shines like a beacon. The great entomologist radically changed the way we think about the life of insects, their development-and more broadly-the physiology and development of life. He was the father of insect physiology, according to one of his students, Michael Locke, now professor and chairman of zoology at the University of Western Ontario, Canada, who, in 1995 Locke wrote an obituary on Wigglesworth for the Royal Society in London."
