A very nice and very early issue of The Harvard Illustrated Magazine -- only the second of the first volume to be published. Measures 7-1/2"x9-3/4" and is very clean and tightly bound. Faults are confined to a small bit of wear to tail of spine, a snipped corner at upper back. a crease and softening to lower back corner, and a bit of paper from the cover adhered to first page near gutter. Pristine cover and pages. Illustrated nicely with photographs and art including a full page color image of the American flag and two other works of art sporting a color wash. Main article topics include the statue of John Harvard, Harvard's Randall Hall, and the story of the U.S. auxilairy cruiser steamship Harvard 's harrowing trip while scouting for the Spanish Armada. Also includes student literature -- one play and several poems, as well as info on Harvard golf. Great ads from well-known concerns such as Brooks Brothers, Provident Life & Trust, and Perrier-Jouet champagne, but also businesses that slipped quietly into the annals of time. Hot items and services include "colored shirtings", pianoforte lessons, art to adorn student rooms, laundries. beer and wine, hats, carriages, jewelry, and tailoring. The most humorous is an ad for "Pillows -- Ballet pillows, foot-ball pillows, college pillows, fraternity pillows, and pillows to throw." 55 pages, plus the ads.
