Very scarce book written by Dr. A.M. Reid, Principal of the Steubenville Female Seminary which was founded in 1829 by Hetty Beatty. The school was the first of its kind in the Northwest Territory and Hetty served as teacher and principal until it ws turned over to Dr. Reid in the 1850's. It closed in 1898 . This is a slim book of just 41 pages, nicely bound with beveled edges to boards and no cracking to hinges either front or back. Former owner's name is written on first blank page and dated 1906. The contents are quite nice. Faulta are exterior - wear to top and bottom of spine with some of cloth missing on both (see photo). Corners are also slightly worn. Hetty Eliabeth Beatty had no children of her own and was the third wife of Rev. Charles C. Beatty, pastor of the first Presbbyerian Church of Steubenville. She is not lost to time -- a current active chapter of the Questers took her name for their chapter and replaced her crumbling gravestone with a new one. Book measures 7" x 9".
