341 pages. Black and white glossy illustrations. "In the North Compound of Stalag Luft III, near Sagan, there was a secret association of escapers who did fantastic things. On the night of the 24th of March 1944, seventy-six of them broke out of a tunnel called 'Harry' that was 350 feet long and 30 feet deep - the longest prisoner of war tunnel ever dug. Most of them were caught and, you may remember, fifty were murdered by the Gestapo. We were writing this book in North Compound at that time and we give here also the first full account of that strange and dramatic affair." - Preface. The 1963 epic war film The Great Escape was based upon this book, albeit in a heavily fictionalised way. Includes photo of an unfortunate Canadian pilot whose parachute was caught on top of a 35 metre tall German factory chimney where he dangled until morning. Prior owner's name atop front free endpaper. Average wear to publisher's black cloth. Binding intact. Includes new replica dust jacket preserved in archival-grade Brodart. A sound copy of this riveting WWII chronicle. Enser p.148.; 8vo - over 7" - 9" tall; Paul Brickhill, Conrad Norton, World War 1939-1945, Stalag Luft III, Prisoners of War, Prison Escapes, The Great Escape, Escape Tunnels, Steve McQueen
