Pictorial cover with gilt decoration. Wear at the spine ends and corners, fading to gilt lettering and decoration on the spine, scratching to top-edge gilt. Cracking starting at the half-title page and a bit of foxing on the two facing pages that follow. The author wrote on the half-title page one of her poems, "The Mystery," for the book's recipient. This poem was published previously in her book, "From Dreamland Sent" (1895, 1899). She also inscribed the book on the front free endpaper: "To my dear Martha with the unforgetting love of Lilian. January, 1918." 376 pages with Index. Illustrated with 32 black and white plates, including the frontispiece image of Queen Victoria in her coronation robes. Lilian Whiting (1847-1942) was an American writer, editor, and advocate for women's suffrage. She was one of the first women to edit a newspaper-editor-in-chief of the Boston Budget in the 1890s. B37
