Mild edge wear. Smudges on the rear cover. Folder split half-way along spine. Previous owner name written at top of front cover. Also on the front cover is an ink stamp "500. George A. Stephenson," possibly a music dealer. The rear cover displays an excerpt of another Mrs. H.H.A. Beach composition from the publisher: "Ah, Love but a Day!" with words by Robert Browning and music by Mrs. H.A.A. Beach. "On a Hill" is a 5-page score (page numbers 3-7) for medium voice and piano, with a statement from Beach printed on the front page that offers information on the origins of the song: "The arranger is indebted to Carrie Coleman Duke of Richmond for words and tune, crooned to her by an old Mammy all through childhood." OCLC locates only 3 copies of this composition. Scarce thus. Beach is Amy Cheney Beach (1867-1944). She was a child prodigy who began composing at age 4 and, as an adult, her Gaelic Symphony in E Minor, Op. 32 was recognized as the first symphonic work by an American woman and after an 1896 performance of it by the Boston Symphony, she was recognized as one of America's leading composers.
