The author, Jackson Scholz (1897-1986), was an American track star who appeared in three Olympics (1920, 1924, and 1928), winning two gold medals and a silver medal. His losing race against Scottish runner Eric Liddell in 1924 was depicted in the 1981 film Chariots of Fire. Scholz later authored a number of juvenile sports stories.
